Board and Batten Calculator

Lay out evenly spaced vertical battens without guessing where the first board goes. The calculation states exactly what “gap” means.

What this result includes

One unobstructed wall. The result is a layout, not a structural fastening plan. Subtract or plan around outlets, doors, corners, and uneven walls before cutting.

Reference formulas and worked examples below keep their stated units. Monetary examples use USD; dimensional examples use US customary units unless labeled otherwise. Metric calculator inputs are converted to these reference units before calculation. Choosing another currency does not convert example amounts or exchange money.

How to use this board and batten calculator

Enter wall width, batten width, and the count. Include both edge battens for a framed layout, or leave equal clear margins at both ends.

How the calculation works

With edge battens, clear gaps = batten count − 1. Clear gap = (wall width − batten count × batten face width) ÷ clear gaps.

Without edge battens, clear gaps = batten count + 1. The first and last clear spaces become equal end margins.

Center-to-center spacing = clear gap + batten width. Material length is batten count × batten height; it does not optimize stock-board cuts.

Worked example

On a 120 in wall with six 3.5 in battens covering both edges, five clear spaces share 99 in: 19.8 in clear gap and 23.3 in center spacing.

Limits and assumptions

One unobstructed wall. The result is a layout, not a structural fastening plan. Subtract or plan around outlets, doors, corners, and uneven walls before cutting.

Frequently asked questions

Is spacing measured edge-to-edge or center-to-center?

The main result is clear, edge-to-edge space. Center spacing is shown separately and adds one batten width.

Are the battens at both ends counted?

Yes when “Cover both wall edges?” is on. A count of six includes the first and last edge battens.

Can I enter 3 1/2 inches?

Yes. Decimal inches, simple fractions, and mixed fractions such as 3 1/2 are accepted.
